Around: A Unique and Functional Residential House Design

Reorganizing Space for Perfect Lighting and Smooth Traffic Flow

This project, named Around, showcases the innovative design skills of Kuan Ting Chen in reorganizing space to create a unique and functional residential house. By reallotting walls and openings, the design achieves optimal lighting and a smooth traffic flow, enhancing the home's functionality.

The dominant use of dark-color construction materials along the X and Y axis connects different areas of the home, while accentuated ceilings along the Z axis create a bright and roomy atmosphere in this parent and child space.

The construction of this project spans a total of 90 square meters and incorporates various materials such as faux finishes, laminate flooring, wallpaper, oak, and melamine.

One of the main highlights of this design is the strategic placement of storage space throughout the 90 square meters. The living room, dining room, and study room have the largest open areas, allowing occupants to freely arrange furniture and adapt the space according to their needs.

Located in Taoyuan City, Taiwan (R.O.C), the Around project commenced in May 2018 and was completed in November 2018. During the design process, the team conducted thorough research by visiting the owners' rental house to understand their daily living habits and the size and quantity of their belongings. The use of virtual reality technology helped bridge the gap between the owners' expectations and the final result.

Despite budgetary restrictions, the design team successfully overcame challenges by reducing on-site construction and contracting different manufacturers to build components in factories. This approach ensured accurate measurements and proper on-site assembly. Additionally, the project had to be completed on time due to the expiration of the owners' rental contract.

Every aspect of the design, from space planning to the smallest details like the handle design, serves a purpose. Shapes are created with function in mind, and the use of healthy green building materials ensures the well-being of the new homeowners and their children.

Around has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This accolade acknowledges the project's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
